Network Analysis Reveals Sex- and Antibiotic Resistance-Associated Antivirulence Targets in Clinical Uropathogens
http://pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.1021/acsinfecdis.5b00022
We teamed up with mathematician Peter Mucha at the University of North Carolina to apply the tools of network analysis to identify virulence gene patterns >300 clinical E.coli isolates . We found not only that these genes tend to appear in groups but that these groups also correspond to antibiotic resistance and patient sex! Some virulence "strategists" prefer males while others prefer females.
